- ArcelorMittal and Rhenus Weserport invest in new Ardelt Tukan K high-performance crane to increase efficiency in port operations
- Three times faster ship handling and significant reduction in emissions
- Digitalization, automation, and energy efficiency strengthen sustainability at the Bremen site
Steel group ArcelorMittal and Rhenus Weserport are investing in modern port infrastructure by installing a new high-performance crane, the Ardelt Tukan K, to handle ship cargo more efficiently. The investment will strengthen the steelworks' material supply, increase productivity and reduce emissions. The crane was inaugurated today at Weserport Terminal 3, on the premises of ArcelorMittal Bremen. The investment volume is in the low eight-figure range.
Powerful, flexible, and environmentally friendly
The Ardelt Tukan K is a double jib crane with an integrated bunker that combines high efficiency, flexibility and sustainability. With a total weight of 1,070 tons, a height of 73 meters, and a handling capacity of up to 2,300 tons per hour, it is one of the most powerful cranes in its class. The load capacity is 63 tons and the grab capacity is 47.5 tons. Thanks to modern technology, ships can be unloaded up to three times faster in the future. This shortens lay times, relieves pressure on the port and surrounding area and significantly reduces emissions such as noise. The crane uses an automated operating mode, which further speeds up the workflow. Rhenus also attaches particular importance to energy efficiency: a regenerative braking system feeds energy back into the grid during braking, thereby reducing power consumption. The crane is powered entirely by the local power grid.
Long-term investment in the future of the port
“With this important investment, we are sending a strong signal about the future viability of our company. The new crane makes our raw material deliveries faster, more flexible and more sustainable, and significantly reduces the burden on the port and the surrounding area,” says Rainer Böse, CEO of ArcelorMittal Bremen. Rudolf Egbert, Managing Director of Rhenus Weserport, adds: “The Ardelt Tukan K boosts our performance, reduces emissions and improves working conditions. The crane is therefore an important contribution to the further development of our logistics processes.”
